Resolution calls for ban on weddings after 10pm

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday banning weddings, official and non-official activities and other such gatherings at public places and banquet halls after 10pm.

The resolution – tabled by MPA Sheikh Alauddin – said that the ban should come into place because of the law and order situation and load shedding. Din said no request for functions should be entertained at wedding halls, public places, grounds or roads after 10pm. A heated debate followed when some members objected, saying the resolution would stop people from enjoying special events.

One of the members said Din was out to land bridegrooms in trouble, but another – defending the ban – said functions that would conclude early would actually “facilitate bridegrooms by giving them more time”. Speaker Rana Mushhood Ahmed Khan said the matter would be decided through a voice vote. The House then echoed with simultaneous cries of “yes” and “no”, and the speaker said that according to rules, members would now have to stand up to vote. Subsequently, almost all the members stood up, except for only six, to pass the resolution.

In addition to this, the House also passed three resolutions for the establishment of separate emergency units for women and a cadet college in Fort Minro and for government employees to pay house loan instalments according to their will.

Din also tabled three adjournment motions. In the first, he said a large number of government colleges were producing “very poor results”. Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the government was monitoring these colleges, and would take action against them. In another motion, Din said the use of narcotics was on the rise, and several types were now easily available.

The last adjournment motion on the construction of various projects in the province was put off until next week. nauman tasleem
